WordPress Geotagging Plugin…

29.03.2007 by Mich
Have you ever wondered if it was possible to geotag your posts in WordPress in an easy way? So have I. And since there wasn’t anything easy available out there, I decided to write a plugin for that, using an industry standard: Google Maps.

What does the plugin do?
  • The plugin lets you geotag an entry on your blog, directly from a place you click on a Google Map in your posting screen or by entering an address into a search box. Your geotagged entries will have a link “see on map”.
  • The plugin will make your Atom, RSS2 as well as RDF feeds GeoRSS compatible, which will allow you to load it into Google Maps (example here with my photblog feed) and loads of other cool stuff!

Wordpress Post screen Wordpress feed in Google Maps

How can it be installed?
  • Download the WordPress geotagging plugin here.
  • Put the ‘geotagging’ folder into your ‘wp-content/plugins’ folder of your WordPress installation.
  • Activate the plugin in your WordPress admin console.
Go to “Options” and “Geotagging”. There, enter your Google Maps API key (that is freely available here).
  • Change all other settings to suite your needs. Click “Save”.
  • When you will be writing a new post, there will be a box available below called “Geotagging”. It’s now up to you to find the correct spot by browsing the map or entering the address.

The plugin is running on my experimental WordPress blog, which contains some other plugins I am also writing, like the Google Maps lightbox plugin that combined with geotagged posts will make your WordPress geotagging experience a lot more fun.

Argh!!! I'm thrilled and depressed! Depressed because I had just decided to build what you have here (and thrilled, of course because now I just have to pester you for features instead of building the darn thing.

Great idea and one that I'm definitely going to use.
Have you seen GeoPress? (http://georss.org/geopress) - it does geocoding/tagging, maps (google/yahoo/microsoft/et al. via Mapstraction), GeoRSS, KML, Microformats, search by location, and soon polylines, and more.

Congratulations on building an awesome plugin!

I made one slight modification to it so that it will output Technorati-friendly tags as well - which allows for indexing via API by remote applications such as my community news project, blockrocker.com. You can see the modified plugin in action on my technology blog here:

Anyway - thanks for your awesome work, and happy tagging!

-Rod.
What a cool plugin! I tried the Geopress plugin, but I much prefer the simplicity of yours. Thanks a bunch!
Is there anyway that we can output the link and caption somewhere else then in the bottom of the post (let's say for example, in the loop, but not in the post, near the categories or my tags!?)
What a cool plugin! thnx

The new version 0.1.4 is not working with gmlightbox 0.1.3.
0.1.3 of both worked

I have updated yesterday and since that I'm just getting a gray lightbox map.

Seems to be an javascript problem: "a not defined" -> null reference
with googlemaps javascripts imho
Thank you
Hi
Is this plugin still alive?
Sounds exactly what I am after for my site - but the download link above is not working => file not found

Would be great if I could get me hands on this.

Many thanks
R
Very nice little plugin... trying it out on my my new site.
Thanks for making this! Beatifully simple.

Slight problem is that for each rss item, google maps shows me two balloons and two items

Apart from that, it's exactly what I need, cheers!
Update for 2.7 please! I was excited to start using this plugin on my new site and then the 2.7 update kind of messed it up...
@Jules: Hadthe same problem, all entries twice on Google Maps. Edit file geotagging.php and remove line 89 (in v1.3):

. "\t\t$latitude$longitude\n"

Thanks for a great plugin!
bbbuhuhuhu.. yes i'm very afraid thi wonderful plug do not work in wp 2.7!!
